Devonport keep perfect preseason

Final round of the North West summer was played tonight.  Both games being played at different venues again.
Devonport were the host to Somerset kicking off at 630.  Devonport won this encounter 3-1. Chris McKenna would be happy with his troops being undefeated in the 2012 preseason including winning the Mies family cup back in January.
Somerset will be looking forward to next week facing Launceston City and some new faces after not experiencing  the best start with an up and down preseason.  John Wheeler opted tonight to rest a few players including Chris Smith.
In the other game also kicking off at 630, Burnie hosted Ulverstone. This game ended a lot closer than many people would have thought.  I'm not sure in either camps of any senior players being rested but the game ended in a draw.  Burnie for the second week in a row went in half time with the lead thanks to Tyler Johnstone, but yet again unable to keep a lead. Will this be a problem for the proper league?  Ulverstone’s saviour was Lain Robert-Thompson.
There is no finals play off this year, rather the Cup was decided on who had the most points out of the six games each team played. Devonport 18 points Ulverstone 10 points Somerset 6 points Burnie 1 point.

  2. Hey Sam it's great to have your report. And despite a few errors your message is clear - and much appreciated. Keep up the good work :)

  3. Why don't we get reports from Ulverstone games any more?

  4. Thanks Mitch, I pressed publish instead of preview. Then couldn't get back to preview. Still learning... ;-)

    1. That's the sort of attitude that caused so many good players to leave Ulvie over the years! You've settled into the Ulvie way of life very quickly NickO! Good luck to you, you're going to need it!

    2. Are you saying my attitude about writing an article for this blog has something to do with with the overall attitude at Ulverstone SC? Wow! Good on you, mate! Noticed this comment in a previous post. It only comes up when we lose or draw. Sorry I haven't given you the opportunity to share your anonymous wisdom with the rest of us as to why we may have got those results.

Let rip below if it makes you feels good.

  7. anon 1:03, name so many good players who have left ulvie because of that "sort of attitude"? ulverstone are a team on the up and nick has done a great job with them, they should be having a crack at the title this year and the players look like they are committed and ready for that challenge.

  8. As a former player of Ulverstone (good or otherwise) I'm a bit perplexed as to how 'Anonymous Mar 26 1:03AM' draws a correlation between not submitting a match report and why 'so many good players leave Ulvie over the years".....?!!
Please - enlighten us all using your obvious wisdom, insight and experience if you wouldn't mind. Stay behind the veil of anonymity if it helps or come out into the open so we can actually work out if you have any credibility. Currently my assumption is that you have none.

  9. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm good player’s leaving Ulverstone because of the attitude of the club!! Some of us should remember where they started there soccer career weather as a player or coach.
Some of these people left the club chasing glory and yes a few had problems with a minority at the Ulverstone club which is not there at this time .
All I can say is if these players never left the club chasing glory and stayed and did the hard yard to build the club and loved the club and the strip on their back and have true passion for their club the way the likes of Ben Foote, Joel Stone the Baldock boys, Brian Tabret, Jason singleton , Nick Owen, Phil Hall and yes even Braden Mann have for the club.Ulverstone could have been more dominate in the comp than they have been over the years. The way the club is shaping up this season it looks like the club has stepped up and may be a force in the comp and this will be the reward for all of you that stayed with the club over the years and are proud to say you support the Ulverstone Soccer Club .

  11. I'm actually not aware of anyone who left Ulverstone 'chasing glory'. Some left to play at a higher level, including Brayden Mann last year, & I don't have a problem with that.

Why shouldn't a player want to play at the highest level available?

  12. What higher level did Brayden play??

    ReplyDelete
  13. Not sure about higher level. but playing under the best coach in tasmania can only have improved Brayden.

  14. Wasn't really at a higher level but definitely agree with AE, ken is the best coach in Tassie, that's no offence to my current boss nicko, I'm loving playing for nick and love being back with ulvie. The year in Hobart was just about improving as a player and maybe trying to have a crack at a higher level ( mainland) which I didn't achieve. But certainly have improved as a player and I think we have a great chance this year of winning the title and we will only improve together as the season goes on. But I do think this argument about the ulvie attitude is ridiculous, the club is going in the right direction and that's why we've managed to attract a few players to the club this season. Looking forward to the season ahead and will be good to have a beer ( legal now) after the game with other clubs

    Cheers, brayden

    1. Yes, have to agree with you Brayden. I was one such player that had left Ulverstone in the past, all be it many years ago, and I can emphatically state that it certainly wasn't because of the attitude of the club or the players. I also achieved a large amount of success while there, so I certainly wasn't glory hunting. It was similar to your situation Brayden, I wanted to play under who I considered to be the best coach in Tassie at the time, Alex MacDonald. After I left, I still remained good mates with all the players there, and in fact, I came back to play with them for one last season in the Old Northern league during the State league's off season. As far as what Nick is doing with the team, he has got them playing well, and as I have mentioned on here before, it's great to see a different team challenging for the title. It can only be good for the competition as a whole. Good luck to everyone for the coming season and let's hope it's as close as it was last year.

  15. As one of those former players who retired and then went chasing glory I can honestly say that the Ulverstone's inability to submit articles in a timely manner was my sole reason for leaving the club. Kim Rigby's cerefree nature surrounding things like... well submiting articles on time, permiated the playing culture and suddenly, because of this, none of us cared about anything.
As Beardy noted, when you win the League, it will be the most fantastic experience because of all the pain. Keep posting this bloke's rubbish Nick - he's a genius!

  16. Fantastic Rod! The dark secret of Ulverstone finally revealed!! I left when the canteen at Ulverstone no longer stocked egg and bacon rolls and returned when Keith's Savs got served after training Thursday nights.
I also didn't like running or passing the ball less than 40 yards (and I'm still traumatised from Smithy throwing Knights Road mud at me).

  17. hahahahahahahah thanks Rod that just confirmed what i said about leaving the club for glory now who is the genius.

  18. All very good reasons to leave Mitch, and in the case of Keith's savs, a good reason to return. Speaking of savs, I think a lot of people have been traumatized by certain events at Knights Road over the years, particularly in the mid 80s.

  19. It seems anon 05:57 thinks that ulvie is the only club in the world that has lost a small minority of its players to other clubs, you must never keep an eye on the European leagues then. The end, KB
