Ulverstone and Devonport the Winners in Round Two.

Ulverstone got their North West Summer Cup campaign back on track with a win over Somerset Sharks in round two of the summer cup.
Nick Owen somehow found himself in the right place at the right time after he pushed his fellow forwards out of the way to get first chance to tap in a cross that the keeper failed to deal with and this put Ulverstone 1-0 up early in the first half and this is the way it remained up until half time.
Chris Smith put the Sharks back on level terms when his shot hit the cross bar and then the back of the Ulverstone goal keeper and into the net.
Ulverstone got an own goal of their own to restore the lead before Shaun Conkie put the result beyond doubt at 3-1 to Ulverstone.
Chris McKenna, Gravalas and Nick Gratton scored for Devonport and  the only goal for Burnie United came from the boot of Ling in the 3-1 win to the Strikers. The result kept Devonport as the only unbeaten side in the competition, while Burnie scored thier first goal of the cup.

  1. Good to see Nick Gratton finally making his senior debut after a long lay off with injury, similar playing style to his brother Nathan. He played well in the centre of defence and is a player to watch for the future. Looking forward to watching him play along side his brother at Somerset next week.

  2. Burne played a good fast, strong tempo game on the weekend. They will definately be no push overs this year like some people think. Ash Smith and Andy Gibson will be their vital cogs. Eli at the back has the physical build to intimidate players and as McKenna found, can make life not easy. Overall Devonport deserved the win. They had a soild defence in the second half and when going forward looked dangerous. It looks like McKenna is trying to figure out his midfield as it looks unsettled atm. It was good to see him back in action. A pleasure to watch everytime he plays.

  3. Watched some of first half of Dev and Burnie. Fair assessment above but Jesse Curran in midfield for Dev is an absolute jet. He does nothing fancy but his understanding of the game, positioning and decision making are all first class and he's still only 15 maybe just 16. Hopefully this is his last year in the state as his talent would be wasted here (Although Dev might not think so)

In our game, Somerset were on top most of the first half. Made a few changes at half time and it was fairly even after that. It could have been any old scoreline at the end of the day. Apparently it was Casey Eaves 300th game for the sharks. Big effort if that's true.

To set the record straight in Donk's report, It takes all my experience and nous to follow in any cross or shot no matter how lame. Keeper fumbled an easy cross and, despite my best efforts to miss it the first time, managed to slide in and put it over the line from about 2 inches. Best goal I've scored in 2 and a half years! The young fella having a dig at me before that for being old was nowhere to be seen :)
