And The Winners Are...

Just a brief rundown of the night and then we'll share the winners.

It was an interesting night at the NPL Best and Fairest dinner. Firstly, if that is what sort of meal you get for $60 these days then we will all go hungry. Most people there would have preferred a garlic bread for entree, a souvlaki and chips for main and a frog in the pond for desert than what we had. There is next year's menu right there. Secondly, and lastly, if you're not going to count out all the votes on the night (or even if you did) then at least produce a handout of all the vote getters for the average punters who just like to see if they polled a vote somewhere along the way.

I would personal like to congratulate all the winners on the night. They were all very gracious and all spoke well (even Cas Douglas!) I would have liked to give you top tens for each league but the leader boards were only up half a second so I did the best I could with pen and paper.

Just a quick aside, there was a touch of controversy with this award that may have gone unnoticed to many. Georgia Foote finished 2 off the lead however a team they were to played against (can’t remember who) in the last few rounds forfeited meaning Georgia missed the opportunity to gain the 2 or more points needed to share or take the award outright.

  3. what a load of crap honestly baker and hingston neither deserved that award and should give it back total disgrace by a bunch of bang average referee's

  4. I'm glad the amount of food served was the number 1 concern Nick! Getting GayFL and NRL scores during the night was number 2 apparently. What hope have we got?

  5. Mckenna has every right to feel robbed but Baker is a deserving winner. Most underated player going around. Hingston well... GD loses a bit of credibility on that one.

  6. The meal tasted alright but in relation to what we were expected to pay ($60) for it it wasn't much.

It was a bit of soup, a piece of steak or chicken with not much else on the plate and a cheese platter to share amongst the table.

In response to the post that the winners didn't deserve it, a very unfair comment!

Both players were pivotal in their club having success this year and they are clearly held in high regard. I would say you are a disgruntled Kenny fan. Chris had a massive year but all the hype about Dev being a one man team may have clouded your judgement as to him being a clear favourite. Dev had plenty of quality players taking votes off him and this probably cost him in the end. He would have been a very worthy winner but it just didn't go his way.

I know the refs might not be the best people to vote on these things but that is how it is. I think Joel Stone only ended up with one vote for the whole season. I watched him play all season and if he wasn't worth at least 10 votes I'll go jump. Having said that I am not surprised that he only got 1 vote from the Refs.

    NO

  7. In the women's City had a game against Burnie United cancelled due to bad weather also. So it almost goes without saying Lauren would of polled votes there.

  8. How did Cedric go in the unders nick?

  9. Joel is very mouthy on the park however Nick. This can put players offside with refs, pardon the pun.

Agree though was your best player on the 3 occasions I saw Ulvie in 2011

  10. how the f**k does Joel Stone only get 1 vote the whole year we know the kid may do some stupid things by chatting back but deary me the ref's should probably start giving people votes when they play well instead of not giving them any because they dont like the person

Im not taking anything away from the other vote getters and congrats to the top four for polling well and a big congrats to Mark Baker.

  12. not a fan of kenny great player but just more deserved of the award than hingston and baker even they both apparantly said so schipper was no where near it seriously refs got no idea can't even handle the games let alone see who the best player is fft need a bunch of new fresh refs who aren't biased and

Your coment is a disgrace ! I am suprised it was aloud to be posted. I would assume for you to make coment you watched both players play every game ? It is fair to say that Kenny missed votes when you would think he should poll but he also gained some suprising votes !
Mark Baker is one of the most deserved winners you could possible think of with a number of years at the top of his game.
Well done to all winners on the night!

  14. I think it funny people say thing like Joel Stone only got 1 vote the whole year.. we know the kid may do some stupid things by chatting back..hello its called best and fairest the player who chats back at the referee is extreemly unlikely to get votes no matter how talented they are..watch any awards night and that is planily apparent..When he learns to keep his mouth shut and play the game I reckon he might just win the medal.

  15. Congrats to all the winners!

Stoked for Caz, been very close in the past and was gonna win one eventually.

Well done Bakes, ya might have to rethink those retirement plans now!!

  16. I'm sure his more interested in winning games than getting three votes from being nice to the referees. Especially the two imcompetent old men from the nw
coast who seem to enjoy life by ruining games of soccer each weekend

  17. Well done to bakes and todd for the win...Todd is central to the northern rangers, the team play through him and he knows where to position himself to get the ball...in the last round game against NR todd got forward and scored after playing mainly in a defensive midfield area - something many midfielders here cant do...Bakes, well done, with his midfield presence, tenacity, always working hard and someone who always has composure on the ball he was a big reason, along with matty sessay, and duffy in winning the comp this year. benny crosswell

  18. when i heard that Bakes had won the award on equal points with another player, I did make the assumption that is was with Chris McKenna. Apparently not and well done to Todd. I admit that I put a lot of Devonport's wins down to Kenny alone and at stages claimed they were a one man team, however after playing them (only twice I know) this year, I realised that they are a far more rounded side than I anticipated. I also know that in both matches against Knights, Duffy did a massive job on him and I'd be extremely surprised if Chris polled in either match. Probably the best player in the league but refs can only poll who they think is best on the day - not on potential (as Capt Aus did with his selection of R Hughes in his team of the year). It is this type of voting that players get frustrated with - voting on reputation!

Again, well done to baker and hingston (perhaps a 3way tie would've been fitting as the top 3 sides were also sooooooo close)

  19. anon 21:34 duffy did so massive a job kenny scored 3 in those 2 games. hate to see duffy on an off day :)

  20. to the best of my knowledge anon 18:26 it was 2 goals in 2 matches and 1 was a pen. Both losses might I add, nice research tho!

  21. Well done to all winners. Why people whinge who wins i'll never know. They polled enough votes in the whole year to win. Whether they played well or not so well against other teams. Simple as that. Well done Todd and Mark. Yes McKenna is a good player, and so are many others that didnt win it. Move on...

    ReplyDelete
  22. anon 18:26 Kenny didn't score 3 he got a penalty in the first game which duffy didn't cause. Also he scored 1 in the last game but that was still not enough winners are grinners so get your facts right.
