Final Round Of Summer Cup

Round 3 of the summer cup kicks of this Saturday at Shark Park.

Being that it is the final round; Finals positions are still up for grabs.

In the early game kicking off at 12.30pm is between Ulverstone and Devonport.

With Ulverstone virtually booking its self in next weeks grand final, They will be out to try and make it a clean sweep of the 3 round.

After beating Somerset’s reserve side last week quite convincingly, I’m sure Ulverstone will be trying to keep their goal average up.

On the other hand Devonport have to win to make it through to next weeks final, But Coach Chris McKenna and the club have a massive head ache in that they have to play every day this weekend (N/W summer cup, Hudson cup, State wide cup).

Chris McKenna had this to say about the way the club is approaching this weekend. While the North West cup ranks lowest in our list of priorities, we still want to see our boys performing well & playing good football. I didn’t see our game last weekend but I’m told it was a game we controlled but probably held onto the ball too long at times.

Ulverstone have been progressing well throughout the tournament & will be a tough opponent so we think it will be good for the development of our young guys.”

In the later game Somerset host Burnie and will know their outcome before they kick off. If Ulverstone beat Devonport all Somerset have to do is draw. But if Devonport win then Somerset have to win and will come down to goal difference.

Somerset will again fill a squad of juniors and reserve players due to the senior team resting, having to play Taroona Monday in the state wide cup.

Kevin Considine is still very confident that the team he puts out this week will bring home the result after learning a lot from last weeks flogging.

Kevin has this to say” Due to the Sharks having a double header this weekend it was decided to “blood” a large number of young players. With 5 of the 10 senior debutants being only 15 years of age, it wasn’t the result that was important, more the experience of playing senior football. Ulverstone basically controlled the match from the start, scoring 4 goals in each half, but to the squads credit they never gave in, and there were some pleasing performances by some of individuals in the 0 – 8 loss.

The seniors (including several U/18’s) played well in the extreme heat in Launceston, controlling the quite physical encounter with Launceston United from the kick off, allowing its opponents only several chances (generally from defensive errors), while creating numerous opportunities. Sam Phillips-Crole bagged 2 great goals, with Sam Cocks, Ryan Liston, Andrew Willcox, Kyrone Johnson & Jeremy De-Bomford one each, in the pleasing 7 – 0  team victory.

This win now means that the seniors once again have another double header, with the Summer Cup match v Burnie on the Saturday & the State-wide Cup match in Hobart v Taroona played on the Monday. With several new recruits available or likely to sign this week, a stronger squad should match up better this week at Shark Park.
