Launceston City were the only Victory League side to be knocked out of the State Wide Cup by a Premier League opponent, while Northern Rangers were the only side that failed to score.

Somerset made the long trip to Taroona, after being told to play at 12 noon, making the long trip even more difficult with an early bus trip in order to cover the 4 hour all up trip, do the math but the Sharks must have had to have left no later than 7am.

Whilst the Sharks opened the scores through the penalty spot after Sam Cocks dispatched the spot kick, they held their lead to half time, but perhaps preparation let them down, as Taroona, known for slaying the Giants in this competition, steam rolled the Sharks in the second half, winning 3-1.

Clarence played out an even affair in a firey and hard FOUGHT match at Valley road.  A more appropriate kick off time for the southerners at 1pm allowed them to be better prepared.

Clarence opened the scoring and looked good enough to go on with it, but their test was always going to be the second half, having travelled up with only 12 players.

Ulverstone lost Snow Compagne to a head injury and was taken away by ambulance, but the 42 year old was having a good game for the reds, and kept Clarence quiet, particularly in the air.

Shaun Conkie volleyed home the equaliser early in the half after a nice cross, before an all in brawl broke out and plenty of good old fashion punches thrown.

Adam Conkie of Ulverstone and Rowan Heggie from Clarence were the ones that got their marching orders, though I’m not sure everyone got what they deserved, the referee just sent the two he saw throwing the most punches.

Ulverstone managed to find another as the match wore on and won 2-1 to progress.

Next was the all Victory League clash between Devonport and Northern Rangers.

An even match ensured only a single goal separated the two, Rangers started strongly and controlled the opening 20 minutes, but Devonport fought their way back into the contest, and started to take control.

Joel Stone was outstanding, and Kiren Mulrany looked strong at Centre back for Devonport.

Nil nil at half time was eventually broken when Mulrany came up for a corner, Pooley made a gallant effort to save a 50/50 ball, but it fell to Mulrany who slapped the loose ball home for the lead and win.

Launceston City were bundled out by their Northern Premier League opponents Riverside, City’s goal coming from Hill while Riverside stunned the black and white with three goals from Hughes, Marzetti and Nielson.

The Quarter Finals will be played on Easter Monday.

Final Round Of Summer Cup

Round 3 of the summer cup kicks of this Saturday at Shark Park.

Being that it is the final round; Finals positions are still up for grabs.

In the early game kicking off at 12.30pm is between Ulverstone and Devonport.

With Ulverstone virtually booking its self in next weeks grand final, They will be out to try and make it a clean sweep of the 3 round.

After beating Somerset’s reserve side last week quite convincingly, I’m sure Ulverstone will be trying to keep their goal average up.

On the other hand Devonport have to win to make it through to next weeks final, But Coach Chris McKenna and the club have a massive head ache in that they have to play every day this weekend (N/W summer cup, Hudson cup, State wide cup).

Chris McKenna had this to say about the way the club is approaching this weekend. While the North West cup ranks lowest in our list of priorities, we still want to see our boys performing well & playing good football. I didn’t see our game last weekend but I’m told it was a game we controlled but probably held onto the ball too long at times.

Ulverstone have been progressing well throughout the tournament & will be a tough opponent so we think it will be good for the development of our young guys.”

In the later game Somerset host Burnie and will know their outcome before they kick off. If Ulverstone beat Devonport all Somerset have to do is draw. But if Devonport win then Somerset have to win and will come down to goal difference.

Somerset will again fill a squad of juniors and reserve players due to the senior team resting, having to play Taroona Monday in the state wide cup.

Kevin Considine is still very confident that the team he puts out this week will bring home the result after learning a lot from last weeks flogging.

Kevin has this to say” Due to the Sharks having a double header this weekend it was decided to “blood” a large number of young players. With 5 of the 10 senior debutants being only 15 years of age, it wasn’t the result that was important, more the experience of playing senior football. Ulverstone basically controlled the match from the start, scoring 4 goals in each half, but to the squads credit they never gave in, and there were some pleasing performances by some of individuals in the 0 – 8 loss.

The seniors (including several U/18’s) played well in the extreme heat in Launceston, controlling the quite physical encounter with Launceston United from the kick off, allowing its opponents only several chances (generally from defensive errors), while creating numerous opportunities. Sam Phillips-Crole bagged 2 great goals, with Sam Cocks, Ryan Liston, Andrew Willcox, Kyrone Johnson & Jeremy De-Bomford one each, in the pleasing 7 – 0  team victory.

This win now means that the seniors once again have another double header, with the Summer Cup match v Burnie on the Saturday & the State-wide Cup match in Hobart v Taroona played on the Monday. With several new recruits available or likely to sign this week, a stronger squad should match up better this week at Shark Park.

Week 3 - Sunday, March 3

A late flurry and spirited come back from Devonport who trailed Tilford Zebras 3-0 with 15 minutes to play, produced one of the great come backs, well Devonport are making a name for themselves as the come back kings in the last 12 months, a 15 minute hat trick to Brayden Mann bagged them a point.

Prospect proved too strong for Launceston, with the Duffy brothers netting three goals between them.

City’s Victory League side toiled hard to overcome Rangers Premier League boys while South Hobart shrugged off the “struggling to finish syndrome” this weekend, with another big win, overcoming Riverside 8-0.
