Devonport were crowned the Mies family Cup Champions today after a 0-0 Final against Ulverstone  was decided on penalties 4-2 in Devonport’s favour.

Both Coastal clubs looked very strong and made a statement to the rest of the competition in the first hit out for the year.

Chris Mckenna’s Devonport looked as strong if not stronger than 2011, while Ulverstone will be one of the big improvers of 2012 if this snippet was anything to go by.  Nick Owens Conkie brothers were in good touch and age has obviously not bothered them at all.  With Connor Meanie and Braden Mann still to come back, Ulverstone will be a team to be careful of.

Both Devonport and Ulverstone had big wins in the 50 minutes matches, Ulverstone getting to the final with a pair of 4-0 wins over Northern Rangers and the NTC respectively, while Devonport hit Prospect Knights 3-0 and Launceston City’s second side 4-0.

Launceston must be the happiest though recording 2 wins in the competition to get their hopes up of some improvement in the league later in the year.

Mies Family Cup Kicks Off.

Agele Luate prepares an attack for Northern Rangers

The first matches in the 2012 Mies Family cup hosted by Launceston City kicked of this evening with Northern Rangers doing battle with Launceston City and Launceston coming up against Prospect Knights

Northern Rangers scored the first goal of the tournament and it was new signing Agele Luate who scored with his first touch for the club, albeit against the run of play.  Luate ran on to a well weighted through ball from midfield and scored well from outside the 18 yard box.

Launceston city scored before the break when the Rangers keeper Alex Bligh was unable to deal with a high loose ball and it spilled for a goal mouth scramble in which City pounced on to level the score.

City then scored from the spot after Declan Cuschieri fouled the City forward in the penalty area to make it 2-1.

That’s the way the score stayed in the second half, with both Rangers and City making good chances in the second half but unable to convert.

Toby Omenihu was in good touch for Prospect  

Launceston registered a win against Prospect Knights.  Launceston went ahead in the closing stages of the first half when a number of shots finally went over the line, despite the ball being in the keepers arms at the time, confusion reigned but when Chris Parr consulted his linesmen the goal was awarded and play restarted from the centre.

Thors Niemly scored a nice goal for Launceston to put the blues 2-0 ahead in the second half.

Play of the night belonged to Prospect Knights though when Toby Omenihu attempted a fine scissor kick effort, his shot was spot on target but was saved by Shannon Rumble in the Launceston goal and the result remained 2-0.

Overwhelmingly the four sides had young sides out on the pitch, and clearly the emphasis was on the clubs youth.  Prospect looked to have the most to come back in with only Backer, Duffy and Omenihu on display, and the only clubs with any new members of any note being Launceston with Rumble in goals and Rangers with Luate up front.

Launceston City Mies Family Cup

Launceston City is proud to present a 2 day football tournament for senior teams to be held at Mitsubishi Park. The objective is to provide participating teams from all over Tasmania with valuable pre-season competition to try new structures, gain match fitness and to enjoy a fun festival like atmosphere.

The games will be played on Friday 20th of January and Saturday 21st of January.
