Stone Is Now Black And White

Only a few days after striker Braydon Mann decided to pack up and move to Hobart, team mate and friend Joel Stone has followed suit.
From what I am hearing and believe is that Tilford have also opened its cheque book and offerd Joel a substantial deal to make him move south.
Really this has to be egg on FFT face as all this POACHING players is really hurting the competition and the North West coast. But most of all it must be hurting Nick Owen as he has tought these boys the tricks of the trade and both now have left him.
I think the comps opperators need to  look hard at what has happened in the last week and start acting upon it. Maybe clubs that are loosing out need to be compinsated from the poaching clubs to allow the loosing clubs so that they can attract other players from other leagues. Because if this type of bull s$&t keeps up the V League will fold and clubs that don't have open cheque books will fold.
Here also is a statement from the Devonport Strikers.

Over the weekend, we, the Board and Coaching staff of the Devonport Strikers, were informed that Victory League star Joel Stone will be moving to Hobart. It’s our understanding that Joel will sign with the Tilford Zebras over the next few days.
Joel’s departure comes just four weeks away from the beginning of the season, and a week after 2013 Victory League Golden Boot winner Brayden Mann announced his departure from the coast. Naturally, as a club and as a community, we have been devastated by these departures, so close to the beginning of the season.
It’s important to understand that we have no animosity or grudge against the players involved or the clubs who have successfully poached Brayden and Joel (let’s not mince words here, whatever way it’s spun, they have been poached), but it’s important that supporters of this fantastic Statewide concept understand the end result of this.
Put simply, if clubs in the North become nothing more than feeder clubs to the cashed up clubs in the South (our players are not the only ones who have been offered inducements to move to Hobart), I fear for the future of the league, as we simply cannot sustain player losses of this level.
It’s no secret that in terms of junior development we punch way above our weight up here, and the entire North West Coast sporting community should be proud of the achievements of all four Coastal clubs in terms the players we continue to produce. We celebrate our success with players like Jeremy Walker, and Jesse Curran, making their way at Hyundai A-League Clubs, as we see this as an obvious positive step in their respective football futures. However, we see little if any benefit for the league, club or players, if they simply move sideways to clubs in the same level of competition as ours.
While our supporters, player group and importantly the junior fans who come and watch these ‘local heroes’ play are shattered by these shock departures, the Devonport City Soccer Club (and indeed the North West Coast as a whole) is made up of individuals with character, pride and single minded determination. Rest assured we will not sit back and accept these losses, and will respond accordingly.

  1. Such is life in the sporting arena. Players will move as they see fit and there is nothing the clubs can do about it. Soccer is ruled by money the world around, only the AFL with its complex draft rules and salary caps have found a close answer to this problem. The NW coast is a small community (60,000 people) with 4 top clubs all vying to be the best. Hobart has only 5 top clubs drawing from around 250,000 people, they will always attract bigger sponsors and a larger number of better players.
I've learnt to stop stressing over things I cannot change and work smarter at doing things that can make the difference to encourage players and sponsors to stay.
We are very fortunate to have 4 great clubs on the coast providing an avenue for many fine soccer players to achieve their goals, lets make sure that we ALL keep working to ensure ALL clubs viability and futures.

  2. Sorry Nigel but you are contradicting your self, you can't have 4 viable clubs if players keep going south. I agree you can't stop this. It's not as bad if say one player from Burnie goes to somerset I vice verse as clubs can handle this but to move out of the north west coast this is where we loose. Clubs will rebuild and move on but you watch it will ruin the V League. How would you feel if Devonport poached Kaimon Jeremy Coxy Smithy and Elliot I'm sure you would agree then

  3. Like the others we lose players each year, this year Ryan Liston to Melb Uni, Andrew Wilcox to Canberra Uni, every year at least 2 senior players move away, rarely to return. Yet we are viable, not always as strong as we like but it is primarily our clubs' aim to provide an opportunity for people to play soccer and enjoy themselves, not win premierships, they are just icing on the cake.
Not sure how it will ruin V League, Devonport will have 3 under 14 and 2 under 16 teams this year, that's over 65 players all coming up through their ranks over the next 5 years, how can they not be viable?
So, Devonport have lost 2 players, yet have imported one, who by all accounts is very good, I don't think they have much to worry about.

  5. Nigel Nigel Nigel, we both know that if another club enticed 2 of your Senior Stars away from your club 4 weeks out from season start, you wouldnt be siiting waxing philoshpically about the swings and roundabouts of amatuer sport - you would be going off your proverbial chops mate! and rightly so. And pleae, dont make silly ridiculous comparisons about playes going to University - that's a good thing and generally considered decision. What isnt a good thing or a considered decision is leaving your apprenticeship in its 4th year with 6 weeks to go (thus forfeiting your trade) to go to Hobart on the promise of driving a Van. (hopefully for longer than a season).
Like you, I want to see young players at our club develop and better themselves - be that via Uni, employment, football or whatever. You seem to be a bit out of step with conventional opinion on this one Nigel (in the North anyway), tell me are you just a mad Maverick plumber, who cares little for public opinion, or are you secretly hoping we pull out so you can launch the Sharks bid for the V.League?

  6. Rodney, Rodney, Rodney....how I would react is of no consequence in this issue, I've had several years were good players have made last minute decisions to either transfer clubs of worse still leave, for AFL., often after they have been signed and registrations paid.
I have also had many an apprentice get signed off with his trade far earlier than just 6 weeks to go, so I doubt Brayden will lose his trade, and hey! I drive a van for work.
The only reason I'm out of step is because most of the complainers have not been club executives who have all experienced this over the years.
I think that the suggestion I read about trying to gain some notoriety in the press and gain some sort of concessions from FFT are closer to the truth, would you suggest that if 2 South Hobart players suddenly decided to transfer up next week that your club would turn them away under principle?
And as for that last sentence....lol,..lol,..lol,,,roflmao....mate I'd be too afraid that if we joined the lofty heights of V League that I would lose too many players to other clubs.
Signed "The Maverick Plumber", not sure about the "mad" bit.
PS..great publicity, back page is hard to get in the off season.

  11. Having played the game until 38 years old, and as a coach for 15 years, I have only seen players come and go from clubs every season. Attracting players, better players, is part of elite club competition. The good players always get chased.
